On Thursday November 21st, from 3 - 5pm the Mason County District Library will be hosting the first of a series of Remote Tech Help sessions at the Hamlin Township Hall. Library staff will be on hand to answer technology questions and help people with their devices. Mason County residents will also be able to sign up for library cards and borrow devices.

The Remote Tech Help series which will include 15 sessions between now and May 2025 is funded by a $25,000 Digital Inclusion Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Library of Michigan. The grant has funded the purchase of new laptops, e-readers and hotspots and the cost of the tech help sessions.

The library has been offering regular tech help sessions the Scottville Senior Center, the Ludington Library and Longfellow Towers. During these sessions, the library staff helps people with technology issues ranging from new device setup and device settings to managing email inboxes.

These remote tech help sessions will make it more convenient for people to get the technology help they might need. During one of these sessions, a Mason County resident will be able to come in and learn some computer basics, then sign up for a library card, check-out the device and bring it home. Then the device can be sent back to the library through the U.S. Mail.

Hardman Construction, Inc. was the prime Contractor for this estimated $819,369 project. The existing metal culvert will be replaced with a 10' x 10' x 33' long concrete box culvert. There is approximately 212 linear feet of new steel sheeting that was installed with this project. The project is funded by the MCRC and Hamlin Township. On behalf of the Mason County Road Commission and Hamlin Township, we appreciate your cooperation during the project.

SOUTH BAYOU & MIDDLE BAYOU BRIDGE UPDATE

It is anticipated that both the South Bayou and the Middle Bayou Bridge Projects should be completed by Friday, November 15, 2024. Thank you all for your patience during this construction process. The Township Board; Supervisor Nancy Vandervest, Clerk Catherine Lewis, Treasurer Susan Ptaszenski and Trustees Johnaine Gurzynski and Ron Key are grateful to have completed these crucial projects as they will be a great improvement to our Township's future. The South Bayou Bridge Project was funded by a $1 Million Dollar grant that the Township Board secured through the State of Michigan and the Middle Bayou Bridge project was funded by Hamlin Township along with the Mason County Road Commission. In addition to the two bridge projects, the Township Board was able to pave several roads within the township including: Fisher Road, Larch Drive, Larchwood Road, Stearns, Fourth and No Name Road. Several roads were re-surfaced and Tamarac, Victory Drive, Sassafras and Cherry Road are scheduled to be paved in 2025.

Hamlin Township received a $2,500.00 grant from the Great Lakes Energy Peoples Fund. The grant money was used towards the parking lot on Duneview Drive.  Members of Great Lakes Energy support the People Fund by voluntarily rounding up their bills to the next highest dollar.  The rounded up amount is distributed to non-profit organizations and charitable activities that benefit people in communities served by the cooperative.  Contact Great Lakes Energy at 888-GT-LAKES or visit gtlakes.com for more information.

September 6, 2022; New Playground Equipment at Wilson Hill Park in memory of Richard and Alison Puffer. Thank you to the Hamlin Lake Preservation Society, the volunteers and Lowe's for their donation.

Hamlin Township was established on February 28, 1861 by the Michigan State Legislatures. It is named after Hannibal Hamlin, Vice President from 1860 to 1864 under President Abraham Lincoln. The first settlement in Hamlin Township was made by Charley Mears, in 1858 in Section Two. The next settlers were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sladick in Section 12. A railroad traveled from Ludington to the North Bayou, it was called the Dummy Line. When the first people settled in the Township, there were woods all around. As years went past and the population grew, more timber was cut and now there are very little woods standing. At one point, there were 84 farms in Hamlin Township. Hamlin Lake hotels and large resorts added much interest to Hamlin Township.

Today, Hamlin Township is the largest Residential Township in Mason County with a population of 3711 per the 2020 US Census. Hamlin Township provides some of the very best summer and winter recreational activities, with new and older homes blending for a delightful community with very little industry. Hamlin Township can truly boast "one-of-a-kind" status and is home to beautiful Hamlin Lake. Hamlin Lake, a man-made lake, is more than 12 miles long and 5,000 acres large that originated during the logging hey-day when lumbermen dammed the Big Sable River to make an enormous holding pond for trees that were felled upstream.
